Winning, gammons and backgammons
The first player to bear off all fifteen checkers wins the game. How much it is worth depends on how far the loser got:
| The loser… | Result | Counts |
|---|---|---|
| has borne off at least one checker | single game | the cube's value |
| has borne off none | gammon | twice the cube's value |
| has borne off none and still has a checker on the bar or in the winner's home board | backgammon | three times the cube's value |
A game can also end earlier: when a player drops a double, or resigns.
Games are played in a match, to a number of points, or one by one for money ("unlimited"); see Match score and the Crawford rule.
